Rates are always much better if you book from the States before your departure than if you try to rent after you arrive. Also, rates get progressively higher the closer you get to the time of your departure. Moral of the story: once you know your travel dates, make a reservation right away.

Be sure to complete your transactions well before your departure to allow time for paperwork to be faxed or mailed to you. Make multiple copies of your contract in case your originals become lost or misplaced. It's essential to have a copy of your contract to get the rates you were quoted. Otherwise, plan on paying more and wasting lots of travel time trying to recover your overcharges later.

You may find yourself in Italy needing a car because your friends who were going to drive couldn't come in the last moment. Or you may find that getting around on buses and trains is less fun than you thought it would be.

Although rates will be substantially higher for last-minute bookings, under most circumstances it will still be cheaper to book over the internet through a foreign-based agency than it will be to walk in to a local rental agency in Italy.
