The Florentine Renaissance Tour
Art, more Art, and some Great Food and Wine!

Mar 20 to Mar 28, 2018

Hotel Pierre

The Florentine Renaissance Tour is a 9-day trip that is aimed art lovers (you know who you are!). We’ve chosen March deliberately so that we can linger peacefully in front of favorite artworks without being jostled by crowds. The first half of the tour will be based in Florence at the elegant Hotel Pierre, and the second half at the Villa Marsili in Cortona, one of our longtime favorites.

Nanni di Banco, Four Crowned Saints - Predella

The Hotel Pierre offers us a state-of-the-art conference room that will allow us to view images and discuss them–with an espresso/wine bar within arm’s reach! Our relaxed workshop format will blend onsite visits with conversation, before and after, about what you’re seeing and what it means to you. Be prepared for an immersive, hands-on experience: we’ll be doing exercises to help you deepen your encounters with the art, and you’ll have ample opportunities to share your insights and experiences.

Theophilus

If you’ve been on The Best of Tuscany Tour with us, this return visit to Florence will give you a chance to explore some of the amazing places that you didn’t get to see on that trip: the Brancacci Chapel, the San Marco Monastery, Orsanmichele, Santa Maria Novella, the Florence Baptistery...

Fra Angelico Cortona Annunciation

For the second portion of our tour we’ll be based in Cortona at the Villa Marsili. Marina, the hotel manager, has promised us vinsanto and roasted chestnuts around the fireplace to accompany our art meditations! From Cortona we’ll make excursions to the nearby towns of Arezzo, Monterchi and Sansepolcro: landmark stops along the famous “Piero della Francesca Trail.” Piero was one of the most technically skilled of the early Renaissance artists and certainly one of the most philosophically profound. You may need to fasten your seatbelts as we explore Piero’s work and try to see the world through the eyes of his paintings.

Madonna del Parto Brera Altarpiece

In addition to feeding our souls, we’ll be sure to include fabulous daily meals accompanied by great Tuscan wines. With any luck we’ll be able to talk Alba into making her wild-boar lasagna when we have lunch with her and Claudio at the Poggio Molina winery!

Those of you who are tempted to join us are strongly encouraged to pick up a copy of Sam’s latest book, The Renaissance of Imagination. If you enjoy the book, you will love this tour. If a little art is okay, but a lot is too much, this is probably not the right trip for you. You will have a much better time on our adventures in Provence, Amalfi and other venues which offer a more varied range of activities.
